Located directly west of the city’s Central Business District, Newtown is Toowoomba’s inner suburb. The eastern end of the Gore Highway begins at the juncture of the Warrego Highway in Newtown. 

In 1865, the region was the original one outside the city centre to be sectioned into residential lots. Newtown attained its own local government, the Town of Newtown from 1913 to 1917. It was legitimately constrained and named in 1981. 

There are a number of Newtown heritage-listed sites, including Oak Lodge and Spreydon at 7 Warra Street and 30 Rome Street; Elphin, Newtown at 24 Anzac Avenue.
