Discover Harlaxton, Toowoomba

Situated four kilometres north of the Central Business District, the suburb of Harlaxton at the 2011 Australian Census, recorded a population of 2,689.  The name comes from Harlaxton House, and perhaps named for Harlaxton in Lincolnshire, England. It was constructed in 1869 as the dwelling of Francis Thomas Gregory, in what is now Munro Street.

Before moving to Queensland in 1862, Gregory was an explorer in Western Australia, serving as Commissioner of Crown Lands and from 1874 until his death in 1888, was a chosen Member of the Legislative Council. From 1896 until 1901, the household was later used as the summer abode for Lord Lamington who served as Governor of Queensland. A railway station was constructed at the site for his use. The building is now in a weakening condition, partially due to detonations from the neighbouring quarries.

Harlaxton has a history as a manufacturing centre and leaving aside the quarries, the suburb is home to the first Darling Downs Bacon Company and the Willowburn railway marshalling yard. Harlaxton is also the site of the Toowoomba Bears rugby union club, Toowoomba Cricket Club, as well as the Willowburn Sports Club (soccer). It also has a number of sites which are heritage-listed.
